What is in the news?

What is in the news?

In this story there was a shooting on the night of October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas; a man with guns opened fire on a group of concertgoers at a music festival in Nevada, Route 91 Harvest. This left 58 people dead and 546 injured in this massive incident. The gunman, aged 64, Stephen Paddock fired hundreds of rifle rounds from his suite on the 32nd floor of the hotel called ‘Mandalay Bay’ nearby, between 10:05 and 10:15p.m PDT.

This incident is announced as “the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the United States”.

1st Newspaper: Metro

The metro newspaper displays their news of the Las Vegas incident with the many people’s faces who lost their lives due to the incident; they titled their article Pictured: All those who lost their lives in the Las Vegas shooting” followed by a picture of the many faces. This appeals and catches the reader’s eye to read further on, as it shows how bad this incident was and needs to be addressed and raised awareness for.

2nd Newspaper: The Sun

The Sun newspaper display their news of Las Vegas by identifying the 'gunman shooter', with a rhetorical question in the headline of the paper; "WHY DID HE SNAP?" and then it follows on with the news article title, "Las Vegas shooting - Gunman was hooked on video poker and blew £8k a day in weeks before massacre". Then it goes on to give 69 pictures of the gunman and images of what happened in that incident that day, for example, showing which places, images of people fleeing the crime scene and the aftermath.

Differences

This is very different compared to the metro because metro had used different language to attract attention towards their article about the 'Las Vegas shooting'. Metro talks about the people who had lost their lives in the incident and give evidence and images of the many people, this being an affective way to making readers be intrigued as the images and headline are bold; referring to the amount of suffer and people have died due to this shooting. Metro aim their article at teenagers+ as their audience because it's a bit vulgar and descriptive for youngers. However, The Sun aim their audience at adults+ because their article talk about 'Why did he snap?' and generally the younger population don't really care about why, just what. They also provide evidence and a lot of images compared to Metro, because The Sun shows who did it and where it happened and the backstory of why the gunman might have done it?
Which newspaper is best? (My Opinion)

In my opinion I believe Metro is the most objective in its coverage of the story, because they portray their article to raise awareness for their incident, this being an effective way to pull and attract readers attentions by providing images of the many people who died due this shooting. Compared too The Sun, their article just wants to answer the audiences questions; 'why?'... This is good too but I believe by subjectively addressing the disaster by providing imagery with a detail headline, causes more attraction and it creates a better field of converge of the story. However, The Sun is very good too because they provide information about why and what too and use subjective language and imagery to create awareness, provided through the many pictures produced on their article.
