Exploring how media organisations create different types of
media products with distinctive characteristics, looking at specific examples
of these products in order to understand the advantages and disadvantages of
these products and the implications for the organisation.
- Characteristics of mainstream products - A mainstream products are different services which have the readily available which appeal towards the general public, as opposed to being in the interest only to a very specific subset of the public. Advantages: Created by big production studios e.g. Hollywood. Huge scale budgets. Movie stars which are popular actors (world renowned actresses, they are attracting lots of public attention because they’re big movie stars. They have all the top end equipment; high quality and expensive material, green screens and recording studios. Their distributions are in very well know cinemas such as Vue and theatre like unicorn and mainstream products have the high exhibitions created in public outing in like premiere movies. Their audience are directed at the youth and to bring attraction towards the youth, they use marketing such as big billboards and sponsors.

- Sells Well
- Higher Demand
- Professional
- Franchises
- Profit
- Disadvantages:
- Become outdated quickly
- Conventional
- An example of a mainstream product would be:This is a mainstream movie because it is at least 1hour long and the production is very professional and furthermore, it’s been aired in cinemas.
- Characteristics of independent products –Low budget films. Will be very hard to make and hard to get it out there due to limited distributors, they’re more passionate about doing the film and completing it but they know it’s going to be hard and will be a struggle to actually get it out onto high platforms. They get people who want to actually help independent movies and they get some professional popular actors. Their budget is low compared to mainstream and they have an independent crew and cast. Their audience are normally stereotypical older genre of audience and their exhibition for their audiences are normally in the averaged sized cinema screenings.

- Independent Spirit
- Disadvantages:
- Limited distribution channels
- Relies on word of mouth
- Limited marketing.
- Low budget/production values.

An example of an independent product would be:This is an independent product because it’s very low budget as you can see the cast and crew in production team in the description of YouTube and that means it’s also aired on YouTube because they’re not able to distribute this vastly into the big platforms.
- Characteristics of niche products – A niche product is a service which has many features which appeal to the specific market subgroup. A typical niche product would be easily visible from other products, and it will also be sold and produced in specialized use within its corresponding niche market. Soul aimed at only a specific audience. It could be a twenty minute film, doesn’t need to be as long a block buster. They might not make stacks of revenue but their main idea is to homing on a specific audience. Production will have a low budget with a lower value. Their distribution are film festival showings and online releases. Exhibitions for these movies are generally in small cinema screenings and the marketing would be in newspapers.

- Attractive to advertisers
- Aimed at specific audiences.
- Disadvantages:
- Don’t sell as well
- Higher production costs
- Aimed at specific audiences.

An example of a niche market would be sport channels like ESPN & STAR cricket.This is a niche product because it’s only aired on VICE and VICE’s YouTube channel. And it makes a niche product because they don’ advertise their news magazines.
