Non Linear Narratives
- Chronology – An order of events, in order example; scene 1, 2, 3.
- Concurrent / parallel narratives - Something which happens (which is complete) during an existing or same time. / This is non-linear narratives or out of chronological order.
- Flashback / Flash-forward - A scene from either another part of the movie from an older day, presented in the current episode of the event. / Set in a scene and something which will happen in the future of the episode, is presented earlier in the episode.
- Time and space -A plan or a schedule people set to complete for a certain task; past, present, or future. Something which continues throughout existence. Multiple terms but here's a few; Space, an area which is continuous or an amount of something, example; amount GB in a computer.
- Serial format - Series, episode ends, new episode starts from previous episode end
- Cliff-hangers - Leave the viewer on a cliff; ending of a story not knowing what's happening next, makes them want to know and want to watch more. Draws viewers back into the series/next episode released.
- Editing and non-linear narratives: continuity v dis-continuity - Non = Flashbacks, Linear = No flashbacks; middle, beginning and end. Cuts; jump cuts etc.
Narration
- Use of a narrator as a piece to camera, voice over, caption - Documentaries; narrator talks over the video or action, non diegetic sound
- Subjective / objective - Something which is based on personal feelings. Opposite of subjective; not based on personal feelings or opinions/facts.
- Mode of address / tone - A genre where the audience and the talker address the situation; how the storyline is delivered. Tone, this would be the way a character speaks through the movie/book which could refer to the strength or attitude of the character or situation/place.
Genre and its function
- Types - Horror, sci-fi, comedy, romance, action, fantasy, thriller, documentary etc.
- Sub –genres - Paranormal; More than one genre put into one media film.
- Cross genre products - Blending certain elements from different genres, example, harry potter; used to be magic, then now like thriller and horror but overall fantasy.
- Role for the audience - Taking in the narrative; viewing it either, subjectively or objectively. We consume the information and we're the 'hypodermic needle theory', due to we take in this information.
- Role for the producer - Determines what the outcome is, for example what the viewer consumes, and if they should produce a cliff-hanger, to build suspense and, draw the audience back.
