Vladimir Propp’s Character
Theory
Propp suggested that
every narrative has eight different character types, these character types are:
The Villain – fights the hero in some way.
The dispatcher – character who makes this villains evil
known and the sends the hero off
The (magical) helper – helps the hero in the quest.
The princess or prize – the hero deserves her throughout the
story but isn’t enabled to do so due to unfair evil, normally the villain.
Her father – gives task to hero
The donor – prepares the hero
The hero or victim/seeker hero – reacts to the donor, wed
the princess
False Hero – takes credit for the hero’s actions to try and
marry the princess]
Linear – Beginning, middle & end
Non-Linear – Twists and turns, Can start from the end or
beginning; via flashbacks. Example: The Flash.
