Task 1a. Research each style and genre, provide an example and annotate it with a definition.

Styles

Modernism - Modern art (Modernism) is to be known as a 'logical movement', which involves cultural historical factors creating a trend behind it. It was developed and came about during the late centuries between the 19th and early 20th century. The style of art is based off traditions of different cultures from the past. This style of art is represented through graphic design through it's drawing which are very bright colourful and odd, disproportionate images.

International style - This style is based off Modern architecture and has a strong correlation to Modernism. This architectural style was developed during the 1920s and 1930s. The creators of this art style where presented in the Museum of Modern Art by Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson. However, this style of art

Post-modernism - This movement was developed in the late mid 20th century through the same logical term as Modernism. It goes across  the architecture, arts and criticism which develops a significant withdrawal from modernism. This style of art is can represented very similarly to modernism in sense of bright colourful images but instead of disproportionate image it's developed into proportionated images.

Grunge - This is a style of music which belongs to the 'rock' culture; equally related to demonic or 'death', with the main colour being black. But in art, it would follow the same style but represented through certain imagines like skulls or demonic material. It could be described as depressing material or correlate towards punk music. It's generally designed to try turn the viewer away through it's imagery. This can be used through graphic design or art by representing their style through covers or posters of album covers or concerts.

Op-art - Op art, short for optical art, is a certain style which follows the visual aspects of art, which are based off the use of 'optical' illusions. These are imagines which are illusion to ones eye, for example; a still imagine is designed through the style of art to be alluded by someone, to look as if it's moving, but it's just a still (image like a jpeg acting like a gif). These sort of works are known to be designed through colours of black and white.

Pop-art - Pop art is art which was created by a man called 'Andy Warhol', this style of art originates from America and began in 1950s. This art is based off the mass media, including imagery from things such as comic books, mundane cultural objects, advertising or cartoony. It's art is basically aimed to be ironic.

Art Nouveau - Art nouveau is an international style of art, which therefore correlates towards architecture. This style of art is described as 'decorative' and  was popular between 1890 and 1910. However, this style of art was inspired through different structures and natural forms, specially from features such as; curved lines of flowers.

Punk - Punk style is abstracted from the genre of 'punk music', as it creates this term of style for this certain area. Punks style can be describe through a lot, could mean a person which feels/is worthless, the other term would to do with the genre of music; a fast past, upbeat, loud and hostile form of 'rock music'. This sort of style can be compared to Grunge, as it follows similar characteristics - normally black clothes and a haircut which follows these certain characteristics; long spiky hair in the middle, with shaved sides of ones head. These sort of characteristics are followed and placed into either an art format or graphic design, for example; when someone creates a cover for an album and it correlates to 'punk', they'd draw/photograph this theme of style onto the cover. This style was very popular during the mid-1970s.

Urban - Urban art is the correlation of cities and people which love the city life. Urban is popular for it's graffiti and street art, which is used to sum up their visual art format; which intend to keep rising in most urban areas. Urban art also relates to international  as it's built from urban "architecture". However, urban art can be represented through graphic design through the graffiti or if shown through image/drawing of the architecture/ city life style.

Anime - Anime is certain style of film and animation from the Japanese culture. This style of animation is mainly aimed at adults but some are alright for children. The style of anime (animation) was created in the 1960s with the works of Osamu Tezuka. Anime was built from hand drawings, which is known as manga now a days - Manga is the Japanese book version, and Anime is the animated film version. Anime is presented through it's colourful drawings, developed into animation and this can be represented through graphic design through the different poster covers presented for the animation episodes.

Kitsch - This style of art or (genre), is a type of art which is more appealing towards the general popular population other than the high art tastes. This style of art/object are sometimes thanked as being ironic. This style of art is a visual type of art, which can also be considered as being in poor taste but it's connotations sense is just ironic.

Photo-realist - Photo-realist or (Photorealism) is a style of art movement where people analyse a photograph/image, and attempt to replicate this photo to an exact extent of what the original looks like. To basically copy and paste and image but through painting or drawing context (replicate this imagine/photo as realistically as possible.). This style of art was created and developed during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Futuristic - Futuristic is an artistic movement called Futuristism, which started in Italy in the early 20th century. This art movement was designed to spotlight certain characteristics of violence, speed and technology, and other features such as the an aeroplane or a car. The furtistits of this movement had practised areas of art such as sculpture or painting, interior design, graphic design and areas such as film or music. Designed to analyse futuristic events and create development towards this.

Cartoon - A cartoon can be related to anime but this is a 2d (two dimensional) illustration of an animation. However, this may not be animated as it can just be a drawn piece of material illustrated to form a cartoon such as comic books or children books. These are mainly aimed at children and have started from the drawings and books and developed into animation such as anime or children popular tv shows such as Arthur or  Rugrats. These cartoons first developed in the 19th century and published in the 19th century newspapers and where described as humour. However, after the 20th century cartoons where soon developed and imported into comic books and became animations being placed into tv shows or films.

Genres

Factual - The term factual in genre would just mean it's real and uses facts to cover it and how this is implemented into graphic design , would just simply mean the material constructed or use is factual. This term could be represented through different films and the story made or poster, could be 'based off a real life story'. The content produced is non-fiction, this is generally presented through the events of programmes such as BBC.  However, this term can be used in documentaries too, as theses type of genres typically use facts and this can be represented in graphic design through it's poster.

Editorial - The genre for editorial is based mainly in newspapers and magazines but this generally just means the 'editor' of a piece of written content. This can be represented through graphic design through the cover or context of a magazine or newspaper which has been edited by an editor. For example, a magazine cover; if it had something out of order the editorial position will come into place and this will be edited to perfection.

Lifestyle - Lifestyle is what people intend to have and do with their lives; their interests, behaviours, hobbies etc. This can also be described for different groups or cultures. However, this genre is generally used and is popular in magazines. This genre can be represented through graphic design by the context of the magazines; health, leisure, fitness, culture or fashion. Lifestyle may be shown through the cover page of a magazine, which could show something about men's fitness routine or culture etc.

Music - Music is a form of art and different activities of cultural aspects, which follows a method of having sound methodically in time. The main elements of music are dynamics, pitch, rhythm and texture. Music  generally uses  graphics design to advertise it's content to a wider audience or gain more views/listens. This is completed by the use of a cover or image/poster on or of a album or music track. For example, on YouTube; you would see a music video and then a thumbnail of the cover or a poster of the music video which appeals to the audience to click onto it. However, music doesn't have to follow one culture, it parts into many subgenres; rock, jazz, hip-hop, classical etc.

Action - Action is generally used in films where the star character generally ends up with a series of hard challenges which include frantic chases, violence and fighting. This genre also generally contains a hero which struggles to fight against life threatening events, between a villain but in the end the hero is victorious. They represent graphic design through the posters they design to sell the film; they place a thrilling image, with certain compositions and colours to appeal to audience and create affection.

Adventure - An adventure is an something someone experiences, which may be unnatural or exciting. Sometimes these 'experiences' may also be risky, since you are unsure of the outcomes which may occur. This type of genre is applied through films and the use of graphic design is through posters which undertake the theme of adventure. For example, the new Jumanji film; this poster shows 4 characters in a jungle with multiple events happening in the background, this represents the theme of adventure through the poster.

Sports - Sports is an genre which involves activities and physical exercise but also includes either a team or individual which competes against each other for a prize or just pure entertainment.  This is used during graphic design through TV shows or posters of where people present and talk about the recent wins of the football teams etc. This can also be presented through posters about sports as a healthy or fitness campaign; a way to appeal to audience to use their gym and exercise, too become like the cover they show. For example, a man playing football with a six pack showing how healthy and engaged they are with the sport. The posters can also be used for people to want to join sports clubs.

Corporate - The term corporate is generally used to described a large company or a team/group which run something. This genre can be represented through graphic design through photography of team members talking together in a meeting room, or through images of working class people wearing suits etc. Corporate can be shown through a poster which may want people to com work with them or to join focus groups and allow their team/company to educate them.
However, this can also be shown through colour for example blue and white is a common colour for corporates as it may connote superior or the connotation of 'white' could connote safety/perfection.

Fashion - The genre fashion is the way someone or something dresses or how their style is. This is mainly practised through clothes, makeup, hairstyles, shoes and accessories. Fashion is used to represent the way someone looks, through their style and appearance. This genre can be marked as 'a popular trend', as the style of which someone wears may become fashionable and be trendy towards others too. Through graphic design this can just be simply represented through the style of which someone dresses too or also through multiple different posters. From movies, focus groups, TV shows etc. anything which tries to sell through advertisement. Through posters, for example if their was a movie about a group of gunmen, they'd all dress with the style of suits etc. However, this is not always typically the case for fashion. Fashion is based on the style of what women wear and seems to be popular in category of females, through; colours - bright, vibrant colours such as pink or green, red etc.

Fantasy – This term is when someone imagines something uncommon to happen or something completely impossible. This genre can be used in graphic design through many different ways; it can be represented through drawings, animations or film. This can be proven through an example of an impossible drawing of an event or character or in film something unnatural and impossible occurs.  Even through posters, if you would to draw a/have a blue lion on a poster; this would just show audience that the film contains something related to fantasy genre.

Simulation – A simulation is when something is created which fools your mind into thinking its real. An imitation of the real world but you’re just in a virtual fake creation but is made to seem as real as possible; this can be described as a deception. But, in graphic design this can be produced through the making of an animation or drawing of something make you feel it’s real but it’s not. For example, photo realism or virtual reality.

Tabloid – Tabloid is a type of newspaper which is a page size smaller than a broadsheet newspaper. Tabloid can represent graphic design through its images and context within the newspaper; the cover may relate with drawings or recent events etc. However, this falls in line with the same genre as editorial and partially magazine… it may also include factual context too. This can represent graphic design through the front cover as it may connote to be a poster too.

Science fiction – Science fiction or Sci-Fi is a literacy genre, which follows under the path of imaginative ideas which intensively involve futuristic science and advanced scientific technology. This may include ideas such as parallel universes, time travel and even extra-terrestrial life. This genre can be implemented through graphic design through the images and drawing created of it; an image of a space ship or from a movie, a poster of aliens on the front cover, with bright flashing lights but a galactic background.

Graphic Novel - Graphic novel is basically just simply a novel which is represented through a comic strip format. Graphic design is heavily used in this (even in the name) through its colours and drawing of the comic strip images.  Graphic novel can be related to manga too, as it follows the same concept.

    1. I've already had the images uploaded on time but on another page because I couldn't put the images on the same page as the definitions.
