Unit 10 - Task 2a - Photography

  1. Upon completion of your portrait shoot the client will want to know that you have considered why specific digital photographs are produced for media products. As part of your explanation to the client, produce a written document that includes a visual explanation of where digital photographs are used in the following media products across media sectors.
  • e-newspapers- front page
  • e-magazines- cover
  • CD covers/thumbnails
  • DVD covers-films
  • Books- covers
  • instruction/training manuals-assembly instructions
  • adverts-electronic billboards
  • interactive media- websites.

Digital Photographs are used in every media product, across a lot of media sectors such as; e-newspapers, e-magazines, CD covers, DVD covers, Books, Training Manuals, adverts and interactive media.

In e-newspapers digital photographs are used to express their newspapers context through image, which allows people to feel more engaged and get an overall understanding of the context; rather than writing loads and loads of writing on a front page, people would use a few images and a little context on the front page, which helps audiences feel more attractive to the e-newspaper and makes them curious, whether if they wish to read more because they've been pulled in by the e-newspapers front pages photographs. However, normally for newspapers/e-newspapers, digital photographs are used to represent the location of where/which area the newspapers article is reporting about. For example, when the Grenfell tower burnt down, news papers would write about it, but in the front page, since it's a big problem (too), they publish digital pictures of the disaster on the front page, which makes people feel more sorry for the situation or want to read more upon the article - Digital photographs helps every media sector to advertise their written context, and make users more engaged and less bored.
-
These same concept contradicts for the other media sectors; e-magazines, the cover of the e-magazine uses digital photographs all over them, it helps sell their idea, and grabs audiences attraction & attention. For example, if I was browsing the web for some e-magazines to purchase on health and fitness, people who create these magazines, would digitally edit and publish photographs specifically to draw audiences in to purchase their magazine, and wholly sell their magazine from the front cover alone. By having these specific multiple digital photographs on an e-magazine cover, it visually appeals towards audiences; with the fitness magazine, if I had been browsing for this, and I saw a magazine with one image and some context like 'Get Fit Today', I wouldn't been interested, and I would probably by human nature, ignore it. However,  if I had seen a magazine with up to 3 different digital photographs, of fitness models and then bulging text on the digital photographs, I would immediately be interested and my eye would draw to the one with more photographs, more graphics, and for the e-magazine  to ensure audiences  to purchase their product, they would make sure the digital photographs have been properly edited, with proper lighting too.
-
Digital photographs are used for CD covers & DVD covers and are displayed as a thumbnail; they normally print out these CD covers & DVD covers through formatting their digital photographs of the distinct product; with CD covers, they take photographs of either an actor or actors, or they take pictures of Musicians/artists and they upload this online, to digitally edit the photograph to perfection. This is the same with DVD covers - films with actors or specific objects taken from person, are taken by photograph, and each specific photograph is digitally uploaded, and edited on software's such as Photoshop. They would also edit other characteristics upon these covers too; little effects, more props, font etc. These digital photographs are then printed out and applied to the covers - some are laminated, some are just paper/cardboard based. These digital photographs develop into the CD/DVD covers, which help advertise the product, because it represents faces or actions, of famous people or well known actors/artists. As with all media products, digital photographs just overall help the product sell more by making it attractive, and eye pealing towards the audience/consumers.
-
Book covers are similar to CD/DVD covers because with a lot of books, they have photographed characters or the writer, or the protagonist and they just simply upload, and edit that on Photoshop. Other covers, are simple created digitally on computer; they don't even need to take a photograph of something, they can just draw something, and then upload it and use Photoshop to adjust and fill in the covers or add lighting etc. However, with books, they usually use simplistic images and just text, but some would just have colour, with a few effects such as stars (sci-fi galaxy type) with text, and that would be their digital 'photographic' book cover.
-
Instruction/training manuals can be related to e-magazines, majority of these manuals will take photographs of people giving an example of whatever the context is relating too, and as before, uploaded and digitally modified by Photoshop. With instruction manuals, they will annotate the context with the information on how to do x, y, and z, and then to help consumers of the manual, they would've added step by step, pictures of examples of people doing what the manual says, making the context less boring and easier to follow. Using photographs within instructional manuals, help benefit consumers because it influences users to become more engaged with the manual, and allows the instructions explained and given to audiences, to become more performable; giving the product a successful outcome.
-
Digital photographs are used through adverts on platforms such as electronic billboards, to publish and sell a persons company or product. Photographs normally used on adverts are still images of either a product, models, or a company. The most common photographs you would see on a electronic billboard would be something such as an ad for McDonalds burger meal (some sort of food), and then the next would be a product of a company, something like Apple music or Nivea cream. These photographs on the advert platform, allow the product to be sold and distributed to audience, so they are influenced into purchasing the product, and with photographs on electronic billboards, you can edit it easily so you have better visuals or for example make a gif on the billboard, which could help you sell your idea better, and electronic billboards allow the producer to apply more than three ads on one signal billboard, in a small area & photographs help sell the product even more than just words, because colours and different features can be applied to the photograph to make it stand out.
-
Interactive media such as different websites, use photographs on the website so people become more engaged with the website as a whole. Photographs used on websites can be coded so you can click on the picture and it can redirect you; or for example if there was categories on a website for a food place, it would have tabs at the top which allow the user to interact more with the website because you can click on it to redirect you to another page (by a hyperlink), and then normally they would firstly represent the new page with an image, as it appeals straight away to the audience and gives a better understanding of the specific area of that website, and whatever the website is trying to sell.  Photographs in interactive media websites would be categorised with the website as a whole, so it creates a better environment amongst users on the website, as the images are judicious, allowing audiences to feel more engaged and have a better visual idea of what the website is selling or whatever the user is looking for.
