Unit 10 - Task 2c - Photography


  1. Now that you have investigated where and how digital photographs are used in a range of media products your client also wants you to show a level of knowledge and understanding through a presentation as to where digital images are used for specific purposes. You will need to give a full analysis on each of the following points explaining the purpose of each digital image.
     
  • enhance written publications-newspapers, magazines
  • market a product-posters
  • promote an event-advertisements
  • generate interest/raise awareness-sports events
  • tell a ‘story’-photojournalism
  • increase sales-computer games, music CDs
 Enhance written publications such as newspapers and magazines use digital photographs in their work as a representation of their article. In newspapers digital photographs are used to address a situation in better format, it appeals to audiences immediately because they are placed at centre of attention, of which people see straight away because they are big and colourful. Digital photographs makes the newspapers content more interesting and sell their idea across better; their purpose is to inform and educate, but not many people want to actually just read a load of writing, because that doesn't appeal to people such as the millions of teenagers for example, and newspapers want to spread their message and news to everyone of all ages, and the best way to do so is by using digital photographs as they capture the news in visual form, for people to see and become intrigued into what the article has to say and this can be effectively done by using things such as mise on scene or universal codes etc.
Magazines are pretty much the same as newspapers, but their purpose is more to inform and entertain rather than educate. This is because they just normally talk about trends and clothes etc. And using digital photographs, expresses all of this simply, rather than just typing loads and loads of writing to express and describe in detail the information about the product/company.

Marketing a product such as posters use digital photographs because the whole purpose of their marking for a product is to inform and sell their product, and with having posters of their product is done through using digital photographs and then edited by using Photoshop. Marketing a product by using posters can be very effective if they use digital photographs, because the digital photograph straight away sell their idea to audiences, and then influence audiences to look into the product and make them think if it looks good, portrayed through style and editing such as colours etc. used for the image, can help sell there product easier; rather than just having writing on a page, digital photographs appeal straight away to audiences. For example, if you saw a poster of a nice chocolate cake, and then it's the main point of focus for audiences, people will be intrigued and then feel like buying the product; simply and wholly from the digital picture advertised.

Promoting an event through using advertisements is successfully done by using digital photographs, because digital photographs are the main attraction of an advertisement, as will all 'specific purposes' they're to inform, market and sell a product. They all consist of making there product eye catching and appealing, making the product less boring and more easy to follow and read; getting straight to the point, and selling the product to the audience. For example, with promoting an event you will make for example an advertisement (any way you wish) and then you will have whatever the main attraction of the event on the advertisement is , and that main attraction will be represented through having a digital photographs of the person, or the object, whatever it really is, and then they would construct that digital photograph to perfection, through editing on Photoshop etc. Overall, draw more people into coming to the event because that will be the first and main thing the person will see, and they'll come interested in the event. An example for promoting an event, could be something like promoting a Festival, and they could make a digital photograph of the most famous rides there are or a main attraction, and then they could apply components of mise of scene to make the digital photograph attractive.

To Generate interest/raise awareness can be successfully done through using digital photographs because it causes attractions to viewers, and digital photographs can perform a better advertisement of whatever the interest is. For example, if there was a sports event, and you would make banners; on the banner you will have photographs of similar aspects of sports such as like kids playing football, and then you would upload those photographs, and digitally modify them to fit the new event by adding text, more colour, edits etc. Having images such as these will sell the sports event more, as people will see that the sports will contain these similar things, or just give a general idea for what will be at the sports event, for people to look forward to, and give them a reason to participate.

Digital Photographs can be used to tell a ‘story’ because the imagines used can portray a story in better detail, or summarise a story wholesomely from the image; for example, if you where to use digital photographs to make a story you can used it in photojournalism, so if you was a journalist, adding photographs allow you to express the details of the story in less words, and give a better understanding through imagery; this can also appeal to audiences more, and make the journalists work more engaging, and fun to read because it can vividly create a story in a readers mind, just from for example seeing an image of a person in a field, with two people shaking hands, while both wear suits etc. Digital photographs can express information rather than having a load of writing, because it allows readers to imagine and engage their minds more physically with the topic at hand.

Digital Photographs can increase sales such as; computer games, music CDs because they sell the product better since digital photographs can portray and set a understanding for what the computer game may look like or what artist is singing, and whether people like this content or are interested, it will engage them into purchasing the product and therefore, increasing sales. Following this, digital photographs will be used to advertise the product, and then therefore allows the product to be published and distributed everywhere, for all to see and helps audiences understand better for what the game/cd is about. For example, if there was a new game released and there was a digital photograph of some cool army people, shooting weapons, with bright colours etc. it would interest people into buying it, especially if the digital photograph had text on it like; "WE NEED YOUR HELP. PURCHASE TODAY!".
