Analysis of an extract from a doctumentary. (crime watch)
Analysis of Crime watch
Format: Series/Seasons documentary.
The format
this documentary is in series/seasons of episodes, where each episode is a
different story of different crimes. This is because there’s a lot of criminals
which need to be caught but, the police do not have the ability, so go toward
the public to help them.
Purpose: Educate/inform/ entertain viewers.
The purpose
for crime watch is to solve unsolved crimes with the police but broadcast this
message to the public, so if anyone knows the person who committed the crime,
they can call into the show to tell them any information about the criminal.
Their other purpose is to entertain, inform and educate the mainstream public
and viewers of the different criminals.
Platform for broadcast: online streaming site. TV
They firstly
broadcast their show on the TV on the channel BBC ONE and for those who miss
their episodes or seasons and want to catch up, they can go onto the website
BBC Iplayer (which is an online streaming site from all the TV channels) and
they can re-watch the videos or find out information about the criminals.
Target Audience: age, gender, social class, Ethnicity
The target
audience of this is generally directed to everyone but you would allow only
mature people to watch this; the age group would be around 16+ and this is
because they just want everyone to be informed about the criminals but it is a
very serious problem. And anyone with information can report to crime watch.
The gender isn’t really any concern, so it would be female and male. Social
class is also not something important nor is ethnicity because their general
idea for this show, is to inform and educate the public.
Reportage:
In each
episode they always refer to current affairs but also old affairs which are
normally aired on the News or been given by the public. Crime watch is a Detection program in which the police ask the public for assistance in the
resolution of crimes and
It’s been reported by a presenter.
Observational:
They used
Actuality in this clip to show the viewers how the person’s reaction detail
actually was like and they also show a small clip from what actually happened
to the woman house. In this case a criminal stole burgled her house, while she
was in it but she is old and he had a weapon.
Narrative structure and narration:
The
narration is linear as they talk about how every event happened in order and
they used voiceover and captions to describe the story and show clips recorded
from the policeman. The presenter for this episode is unseen because he only
does a voiceover, however, we have the son of the mother who got robbed who
also is seen and he presents how she reacted.
The mode of
address for this is formal but the tone is very worrying and upsetting, as
after this robbery she passed away 11 days and everything is slow paste after
the whole rising action of the robbery committed.
Interviews:
The
interviewer is seen and we can hear the voice of the interviewer because the
victim interviewer is her son.
Objective/Subjective:
This clip of
the video is subjective as the way they film it and talk about it is something
serious and the music and tone used is slow paste to crate affection and since
she passed away it creates this subjective theme because therefore this is why
the interviewer’s views are like this.
The clip
created is reconstruction to show the audience shots and clips and they have
actors to represent each event effectively, to show audience how serious the
issue is and to show affection too. And doing this, could make the public
deprive for this woman’s justice, as she was old and passed away because of
this gang who robbed her. Creating a reconstruction informs and directly shows
them everything.
A good attempt and you use media language accurately. You could have been clearer on the linear narrative but overall this is an improvement with good use of examples. Vanessa
